Research Project: Developing Intergative Approaches to Tackle Fusarium Head Blight of Wheat and Barley

Location: National Programs

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-045-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 15, 2020
End Date: May 14, 2023

Objective:
The objectives of this research are: 1) evaluation commercial wheat and barley cultivars for FHB resistance and make results available to growers, 2) test new fungicides available to wheat and barley growers and develop best management protocols, 3) evaluate current fungicides for efficacy on FHB in wheat and barley, 4) educate growers on best management practices for producing high quality wheat and barley in Maryland and 5) identify wheat genes that improve FHB resistance and reduce DON accumulation.

Approach:
The researcher will conduct fungicide trials in Maryland in order to determine the best management strategies for wheat and barley growers in this region. The use of a disease nursery will allow the researcher to identify currently available resistance cultivars. Growers will be educated on the best methods and cultivars at field days, workshops, meetings, newsletters and other media outlets. Lab experiments will enable the identification of wheat genes improving FHB resistance and reducing DON accumulation.
