Research Project: DNA Barcodes and Imaging Resources for Downy Mildews

Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-22000-052-005-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2020
End Date: Aug 9, 2022

Objective:
The objective of this agreement is the digital imaging and molecular barcoding of the type specimens of Peronospora downy mildew pathogens housed in the U.S. National Fungus Collections in Beltsville, MD, to enhance the ability of USDA to prevent the entry of plant-quarantine significant fungi into the U.S.

Approach:
The project team will: 1) Generate digital macroscopic and microscopic images of Peronospora downy mildew type and exemplar specimens housed at the U.S. National Fungus Collections; and 2) Generate a curated database of DNA barcodes for plant pathogens in the genus Peronospora; 3) Generate a multi-locus, genus-level phylogeny of the genus Peronospora using these new resources. All resources will be made easily accessible through open-access, web-based databases.
