Research Project: Evaluation of Vitis Rootstocks with Partial Resistance to Vine Mealybug

Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2034-21220-007-031-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2020
End Date: Jun 30, 2021

Objective:
Objective 1: Evaluate Vitis rootstocks with partial resistance to vine mealybug under varying nitrogen application rates. Objective 2: Set up vineyards testing Vitis rootstocks with partial resistance to vine mealybug. Objective 3: Breed Vitis rootstocks with improved resistance to vine mealybug.

Approach:
We will use potted plant assays to evaluate mealybug growth on Vitis rootstocks with partial resistance to vine mealybug under varying nitrogen application rates. We will also establish vineyards to test the efficacy of the resistance under field conditions at two different locations using table and wine grape scions. We will also start to breed for mealybug resistance into rootstocks.
