Stocker cattle operations often face a shortage of grazable forage on pastures during the summer and early fall. To provide access to high quality, grazable, and sustainable forage, the parties plan to study the feasibility of an integrated system using sub-surface poultry litter application on pastures in tandem with planting a mix of summer annuals and legumes to increase both the efficiency and level of nutrient application. Our overall research objective is to evaluate the impact of summer forage annuals on grazing days and cattle weight gain.
A multi-year grazing trial will be conducted utilizing stocker cattle to evaluate brown-mid sorghum sudangrass intercropped with forage soybean and cow pea with either subsurface applied poultry litter or commercial fertilizer also compared to a control, berumudagrass pasture fertilized with commercial fertilizer.
