Location: Soybean/maize Germplasm, Pathology, and Genetics Research
Project Number: 5012-21000-029-019-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 1, 2019
End Date: Aug 31, 2021
Objective:
Develop and release experimental lines and varieties that are higher in protein concentration and higher in yield than current varieties; Characterize; and Improve seed quality in early planting soybean production system (ESPS).
Approach:
To increase yield and protein simultaneously requires a more productive plant. Protein sources for the presence of the major protein quantitative trait loci (QTL) on chromosomes 15 and 20 will be characterized, as well as protein composition and amino acid profiles of G. tomentella-derived lines and selected experimental soybean lines. Breeding populations derived from exotic germplasm with higher protein concentrations will be targeted, and ARS highest yielding experimental lines will be crossed with germplasm with higher protein concentrations. ARS experimental lines will be analyzed earlier in the testing process for composition than in the past.
