Research Project: Management of Fusarium Head Blight in Small Grains

Location: National Programs

Project Number: 0500-00053-004-096-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 6, 2021
End Date: May 5, 2023

Objective:
The objectives of this research are: 1) test new fungicides available to growers and develop best management protocols, 2) generate data and enahance development of FHB and DON risk prediction tools and 3) establish a central screening facility (field and greenhouse) for transgenic spring wheat and barley lines developed by the USWBSI.

Approach:
The researcher will conduct fungicide trials in Minnesota in order to determine the best management strategies for growers in this region. Growers will be educated on the best methods for producing high quality malting barley and wheat through field days, workshops, meetings, newsletters and other media outlets. Also, inoculated field and greenhouse studies will be conducted at the University of Minnesota to evaluate transgenic wheat and barley lines. The researcher will conduct the experiments following Minnesota state and US federal regulations for testing of transgenic material.
