Research Project: Erosion Control Mechanisms and Regulation Techniques in Mollisol Soils

Location: Agroclimate and Hydraulics Research Unit

Project Number: 3070-11130-007-005-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 1, 2023

Objective:
To understand soil erosion mechanisms and to identify the most effective erosion control practices in the Mollisol soil areas in the northeast China where combined soil erosion by water, wind, and freezing and thawing predominates.

Approach:
Soil erosion mechanisms will be studied under natural rainfall conditions at plot, hillslope, and small watershed scales. Meteorological, hydrological, and pedological data along with sediment yield will be collected. Various agronomic and structural measures will be implemented and compared. Sediment tracers such as radioisotope cesium-137 will be employ to estimate spatial pattern of soil erosion. In addition, laboratory plots and flumes will be used under simulated rainfall and added inflow to study specific erosion processes under strictly controlled conditions
