Research Project: A Platform for Breeding Broad Genetic Resistance to Downy Mildew for Organic Spinach Production

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22000-016-026-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2018
End Date: Apr 30, 2020

Objective:
Develop and deploy an in-field detection assay for the downy mildew pathogen of spinach.

Approach:
The method of loop mediated isothermal amplification will be tested for field application for quick diagnosis of the pathogen, Peronospora effusa. Spinach plants of several different varieties will also be maintained in a greenhouse and growth chamber and inoculated with field collected isolates to determine which pathotype of the isolate is present.
