Research Project: Field Surveys in Vietnam to Collect and Rear Biological Control Agents of Cattle Fever Ticks

Location: Livestock Arthropod Pests Research

Project Number: 3094-32000-039-19-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2020

Objective:
Collaborate with the National Institute for Veterinary Research to conduct surveys and host exposures for potential biological control agents of cattle fever ticks (CFT), Rhipicephalus microplus in Vietnam. Tick parasitoids will be returned to NIVR for rearing and study by students and scientists. Parasitoids will be shipped to containment facilities in the U.S. for host range testing.

Approach:
Vietnamese cattle will be infested with local CFT and held in rural habitat to attract local biological control insects that may exist locally in association with CFT on native deer, cattle and/or water buffalo. Mature and nymphal CFT will be collected from animals and held at NIVR laboratory for emergence of parasitoid insects. Locally infested cattle at NIVR will be used to rear parasitoid insects for study and shipment to U.S.
