Research Project: Integrated Management Tools to Reduce FHB Impact in the Intermountain West and the PNW

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

Project Number: 2050-21000-034-023-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2018
End Date: Jul 31, 2021

Objective:
1) Screen barley and spring wheat adapted to Idaho for Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance to characterize new releases and provide the ability to identify higher levels of resistance within breeding populations and advanced lines. 2) Investigate the efficacy of new fungicide management strategies and generate data to further quantify the economic benefit of FHB/deoxynivalenol (DON) management strategies and to develop more robust “best-management practices” for FHB and DON, and generate data to validate and advance the development of FHB and DON risk prediction models.

Approach:
Spring and/or fall-sown barley plots will be sown at two locations (Aberdeen and Kimberly, Idaho). For Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) screening, individual plots will consist of two four-foot-long rows. Lines to be tested will include standard check varieties, cultivars in widespread commercial cultivation (with emphasis on cultivars in use in the Intermountain West), and breeding lines from various breeding programs, with an emphasis on breeding lines from USDA-ARS, Aberdeen. Plots will be irrigated as necessary for plant growth and to provide high humidity and moisture on plant surfaces during evening, night, and morning periods. For the latter purpose, a specialized "mist" irrigation system will be installed. Prior to anthesis, Fusarium-infected corn kernels (corn spawn) Idaho location with a history of successful growth of winter barley, and which is expected to provide suitable temperatures for disease development after heading. Experimental materials will be inoculated, kept at high humidity/moisture after inoculation, scored for visual disease symptoms, harvested, and assessed for mycotoxin contamination. To evaluate the integrated effects of fungicide treatment and genetic resistance on FHB and DON in hard red spring wheat grown in the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West region, comparisons will be made of the efficacy of Miravis Ace when applied at heading or at anthesis versus the standard anthesis application of Prosaro or Caramba. These trials will be conducted in the Aberdeen mist nursery described above.
