Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research agreement is to conduct laboratory and field tests of Oriental fruit fly and other pests of small and large fruit species in areas where these pests occur. Research will include insecticide, bait spray, bait station and attractant development and efficacy assessments.
Approach:
Pesticide and attractant-based control systems will be evaluated to develop or improve methods for management of the Oriental fruit fly and other pests of small and large fruit crops. Laboratory tests of pesticide efficacy will be conducted using the residual contact method to compare toxicity of standard insecticides to alternative, environmentally friendly insecticides including reduced risk insecticides and minimum risk insecticides such as essential oils high in insecticidal terpenoids. Cooperator will conduct laboratory and field tests in sites with established populations of the Oriental fruit fly and related pests to test bait sprays, bait stations and other attract-and-kill approaches. Parallel tests may be conducted with sterile colony Oriental fruit flies, wild related fruit pests present in Florida and the Caribbean.
