Research Project: Engineering C4 Photosynthesis in Maize to Enhance Nitrogen Utilization

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21000-043-005-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2018
End Date: Dec 14, 2019

Objective:
The objective is to identify and study genetic components of the C4 phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinas (PEPCK) pathway in maize and characterize with biochemical, physiological and transcriptional techniques so that maize can be engineered for improved photosynthetic performance and nitrogen use efficiency.

Approach:
Studies will include isotopic labeling of C4 plants with 13CO2 to study carbon assimilation and utilization of the C4 PEPCK pathway, analysis of photosynthetic performance using an infrared gas analyzer, characterization of the transcriptome for a leaf gradient and enzymatic assays to validate metabolic network operation.
