Objective:
To sample and analyze foods and nutrients of public health importance in the U.S. food supply; special attention will be given to pre and probiotics as well as nutrients such as dietary fiber, which affect microbiome health in humans.
Approach:
The intent of this agreement is to enable the National Cancer Institute, NIH and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to sample and analyze important foods in the US food supply. This particularly relates to studies of foods and nutrients which may impact gut microbiota in humans (e.g., dietary fiber and variability of estimations in foods e.g., pulses, grains and nuts, dependent on analytical method selected). Selection of these foods is based on data from What We Eat in America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Further, USDA (contracted employees through the University of Maryland) will conduct analytical and label reviews to update the nutrient content of other commercially processed, restaurant and commodity plant and animal foods in the USDA Foods Data System (FooDS). Specialists in these food composition research areas will be hired under this agreement. The data will be disseminated on the NDL website and in manuscripts.
