Location: Cell Wall Biology and Utilization Research
Project Number: 5090-31000-026-016-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 10, 2018
End Date: Aug 9, 2021
Objective:
The overall objective of this research is to characterize the feed and nitrogen efficiencies and to evaluate potential differences in nutritional physiology between the genetically diverse, economically important, Holstein and Jersey breeds.
Approach:
Genotyped Holstein and Jersey cows will be fed diets that differ in nutritional composition or protein content. Feed and nitrogen intake and milk production will be evaluated daily. Milk samples for composition will be collected. This information will be used to evaluate feed and nitrogen efficiency in response to the different diets across breeds. Biological samples will be collected at representative times to evaluate possible differential biological responses to nutrition across breeds. Cooperator and ARS will evaluate genomic predicted transmitting ability and its effects on response to nutrition across Holstein and Jersey breeds.
