Research Project: Water Quality at the Edge of Field and In-stream in the Lower Mississippi River Basin

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-004-017-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
Measure, model, and/or estimate the impact of current and innovative farming practices on water quantity and quality while sustaining crop yields and reducing environmental impacts at both the field and watershed scales.

Approach:
Working at both the field and watershed scale, water samples will be collected and analyzed for sediment and nutrients. At the edge-of-field sites, the samples will be collected with automated samplers triggered when a threshold of flow has passed through the drainage pipe. At the watershed sites, samples will be collected with three methods: weekly by grab sample, every 15-minutes with water quality sondes, and with passive samplers. Practices of interest for this study include cover crops, irrigation innovation, and filter strips.
