Objective:
The objectives of this research are to characterize plant genetic resources for germination and field emergence and to develop “learning objects” that can be used in coursework or training programs about genebanks.
Approach:
Laboratory and field work will be used to characterize germplasm with special emphasis on wild material such as Aegilops spp, a wild relative of wheat and Helianthus congeners that are wild relatives of sunflower. Laboratory work will focus on seed quality and germination potential in dry soils using hydrothermal concepts. These efforts will be used as possible topics for ‘learning objects’ that can be developed through video or other creative medium to be used in training or coursework about genebanking plant genetic resources.
