Research Project: National Chip Processing Trials

Location: Genetic Improvement for Fruits & Vegetables Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-283-008-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2016
End Date: May 31, 2021

Objective:
The third objective of our Project Plan directly relates to the proposed agreement: Develop potato germplasm and varieties with improved processing qualities suited for chipping directly from the field and from storage. The cooperators are interested in evaluating ARS-bred potato germplasm for its potential to chip directly from the field or after storage at multiple locations across the U.S.

Approach:
Potato clones developed by the ARS Potato Breeding Program with acceptable quality characteristics for consideration as chip varieties will be evaluated at multiple locations across the U.S. Those clones with the greatest potential will be entered into tissue culture to produce disease-free materials for increase and additional evaluation in grower field trials and experimental runs through commercial processing plants. Crosses will be made to combine high specific gravity, low reducing sugars, resistance to internal heat necrosis, and round tuber conformation with yield and selections made within the progeny from these crosses for improved chip processing type clones.
