Research Project: Computational Tools and a Decision Support System for Management of Sediment and Water Quality in Agricultural Watersheds

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research

Project Number: 6060-13000-030-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2018
End Date: Jun 30, 2023

1. Provide accurate, efficient and user friendly multi-dimensional numerical models for studying (1) water driven soil erosion and sediment transport,(2) embankment breaching processes and associated flooding problems, and (3) agropollutant transport and water quality problems. 2. Develop a web-based Agricultural Integrated Management System (AIMS) that disseminates seamless geospatial data for modeling purposes and sustainable watershed management, and provides automated simulations of runoff, sediment, and agro-pollutant loadings for any watershed in the U.S.

In order to better assess and better predict soil erosion and sediment movement in the stream system of agricultural watershed, existing technology must be upgraded to assess and improve predictions for more realistic conditions in particular those that are encountered during extreme events that threatens life, property and agricultural production areas. The first objective of this project is to develop, enhance and apply numerical models to simulated soil erosion, sediment transport and water quality problems in agriculture watersheds. It is related to the Action Plan of the NP 211, Component 2 (Erosion, sedimentation, and water quality protection)and to Component 3, Problem area 3.1 (Understanding how to select, place, and combine conservation practices to achieve improvements in water quantity and quality in watersheds. The second objective relates to the development of a web based system to disseminate seamless data for numerical modeling purposes, and to provide automated data preparation for simulation-based decision making. This objective is related to NP 211 components 2, 3, and 4 (Watershed Management to improve ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes).
