Research Project: Improving Gut Health and Function in Dairy Cattle through development of gut model systems

Location: Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-31310-114-001-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2018
End Date: May 31, 2021

Objective:
Develop gut tissue models of cattle (enteroids) and evaluate their suitablility for assessing the effects of selected compounds on gut function of live animals.

Approach:
Cooperator funding will be used to support travel of NEA collaborators to national and international meetings where advanced procedures for evaluation of gut health, physiological effects of compounds (e.g., phytonutrients), and production efficiency of dairy cattle are presented, as well as to conduct studies on the development and evaluation of gut tissue models (enteroids) for cattle. Funding will also support purchase of materials to perform laboratory analyses associated with assessing enteroid responses to selected compounds for comparison to previously reported responses in live animals. Funding will support page charges associated with publications resulting from the collaborative work.
