Research Project: Assessing Chesapeake Riparian Buffer Effectiveness Through Spatial and Temporal Monitoring and Modeling - Part 2

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-66000-001-007-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
Evaluate and improve predictions of spatial and temporal variabilities in effectiveness of riparian buffers and vegetative filter strips in the Upper Chesapeake.

Approach:
This effort will focus on evaluating current hydrological water-quality models with regard to ability to capture spatial and temporal variabilities in agricultural pollutant losses. Cooperator's monitoring data will be used to corroborate modeled trends in temporal inequalities in water quality components such as sediment, nutrients, and emerging contaminants. Model processes will be upgraded as our understanding of transport processes develops. By combining field-scale monitoring efforts with innovative modeling efforts we will be able to better represent the performance and functionality of buffers and filter strips over their lifespan.
