Research Project: Can We Get Codling Moth Females To Stop Laying Eggs On Apple

Location: Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research

Project Number: 2092-22430-003-009-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2018
End Date: Mar 31, 2023

Objective:
Identify chemosensory proteins in female codling moth abdomen tip that are important for oviposition site selection.

Approach:
Chemosensory proteins, including odorant receptors, expressed in the female abdomen tip will be identified via transcriptomes. Genes encoding these proteins will be knocked out using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) CRISPR Associated protein 9 (Cas9) genome editing. Edited genes will be assessed for function in oviposition assays with the resultant females.
