Research Project: Improved Crop Production Systems for Sustainability of Water Resources in the Lower Mississippi River Basin

Location: Sustainable Water Management Research

Project Number: 6066-13000-006-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2017
End Date: Aug 31, 2022

Objective:
To investigate, conduct research and solve problems related to the conservation and sustainability of water resources for agriculture in the Lower Mississippi River Basin (LMRB), including the development of integrated irrigation and crop management systems that increase profitability, conserve water, and protect water quality in the Mid-South.

Approach:
The project will be designed to assess the profitability and risks associated with integrated production agriculture and conservation systems in the Mid-South and to improve water delivery and crop production systems that conserve water, protect water quality and availability, improve soil health, and improve profitability. Imperative in this endeavor is the need to assess surface and subsurface hydrology, surface runoff, and contaminant transport in conservation systems at the plot and field scales and to make assessments of the economic factors that will be impacted by adaptation of new, improved management technologies.
