Research Project: Breeding for Resistance to Peanut Smut

Location:

Project Number: 3072-21220-008-018-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 31, 2017
End Date: Jun 30, 2019

Objective:
1. Identify/obtain sources of peanut smut resistance 2. Incorporate resistance into US high-oleic cultivated peanut 3. Develop and test new breeding lines for resistance, yield, seed quality and O/L traits 4. Develop molecular markers for smut resistance 5. Develop understanding of basic pathogen biology and systematics 6. Develop understanding of pathogen epidemiology

Approach:
U.S. germplasm will be screened in Argentina for peanut smut resistance. If resistance is found, it will be incorporated into peanuts for cultivation in the U.S. Recombinant inbred lines will be genotyped and phenotyped and the data resulting from those studies will be used to develop molecular markers for smut resistance that can be used in marker-assisted selection during development of breeding lines.
