Research Project: Investigating Factors that Influence Hypoxia and Denitrification in Aquatic Agroecosystems

Location: Water Quality and Ecology Research

Project Number: 6060-13660-009-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2017
End Date: Aug 31, 2022

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to conduct research on the assessment of microbial processes that improve water quality and mitigate agricultural contaminants from non-point source pollution in aquatic agroecosystems.

Approach:
Field and laboratory experimentation will be used to assess the influence of environmental drivers on denitrification and hypoxia. Seasonal denitrification and sediment oxygen demand measurements will be made using continuous-flow incubations of sediment cores from different habitats to ascertain nitrogen removal from aquatic agroecosystems. Field experimentation will be used to assess net ecosystem production under manipulated hypoxic conditions.
