Research Project: Improved Description of Soil, Hydrologic, and Cover Crop Processes for Models

Location: Adaptive Cropping Systems Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-11660-001-013-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 11, 2017
End Date: Sep 10, 2022

Objective:
1. Improve and test simulation models for water and nutrient movement in maize and cover crops. 2. Evaluate effects of cover crops on fate and transport of nitrogen.

Approach:
Work with ACSL and UMD scientists to design, execute, and analyze experiments on crop growth, and water and nitrogen dynamics in maize and cover crops as affected by management and cropping history. Simulation models MAIZSIM, HYDRUS2D, and RYESIM will be used to analyze and extrapolate results. Data from experiments and the literature will be used to improve and test these models.
