Research Project: Rapid In Vivo Detection of Aminoglycoside Resistance using Laser Electrospray Mass Spectrometry

Location: Microbial and Chemical Food Safety

Project Number: 8072-42000-080-002-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2017
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
Develop an analytical technique capable of detecting antibiotic resistant signature ions directly from solution without any sample preparation. This technique would allow immediate antimicrobial resistance determination and have the ability to screen greater numbers of samples in comparison to established analytical techniques.

Approach:
Experiments and data analysis on an aminoglycoside solution inoculated with a resistant bacterium. Following a short incubation time, the bacterium containing solution will be spun down just prior to laser vaporization to detect signature antibiotic resistant biomarkers and/or metabolites.
