Research Project: Genotyping Breeding Lines for FHB Resistance

Location: National Programs

Project Number: 0500-00053-004-036-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Jun 1, 2017
End Date: May 31, 2022

Objective:
Project 1 and 2: Better characterize eastern soft wheat germplasm utilizing molecular markers and develop improved methods for genotyping and investigate new breeding methodologies. Project3: Utilize the northern cooperative scab nurseries as training propulations for genmic selection.

Approach:
Project 1 and 2: (1) to characterize entries in the Northern (NUWWSN and PNUWWSN) and Southern (USFHBN) scab screening nurseries with markers linked to FHB QTL; (2) to characterize entries with diagnostic markers for genes having major effects on plant growth and development, as well as genes conferring resistance to other pests and for quality traits; (3) to use next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis to genotype SRWW to identify QTL associated with FHB resistance and perform genomic selection (GS). For the Southern region, we will also genotype three-way F1 plants to be sent for doubled haploid production; and (4) Genotypic and phenotypic information from the NUWWSN and PNUWWSN and other training populations and panels of eastern wheat will be collated into a common database (T3). Project3: (1) Coordinate genomic selection on the NUWWSN and PNUWWSN and other training popuiations and panels of eastern wheat into a common database (T3). (2) Work with eastern breeding program on development of appropriate GS models for traits of interest.
