Location: Range and Meadow Forage Management Research
Project Number: 2070-21630-003-003-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Sep 30, 2017
End Date: Sep 29, 2022
Objective:
The objective of this research project is to determine if activated carbon pellets can be used to limit herbicide damage to native bunchgrasses and shrubs seeded at the same time exotic annual grasses are controlled with a pre-emergent herbicide.
Approach:
We will evaluate seeding bluebunch wheatgrass, Sandberg bluegrass, basin wildrye, squirreltail, Wyoming big sagebrush, and bitterbrush as bare seed and as seed encased in active carbon pellets at the same time exotic annual grasses are controlled with a pre-emergent herbicide. Activated carbon pellets effectiveness will be evaluated at two sites in two different years. At each site, each treatment will be replicated four times. We will measure emergence, survival, and growth (height, biomass, leaf area) of each seeded species. We will also measure cover and density by species in each treatment plot.
