Objective:
Develop nitric oxide fumigation treatments as alternative methods to methyl bromide fumigation for control of microbes and insects on stored and fresh products.
Approach:
To utilize a cooperative effort between the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the University of California (UCD) to develop nitric oxide fumigation treatments for control of pathogenic microbes including species of Aspergillus and Penicillium on stored and fresh products and for control of insect pests including light brown apple moth and codling moth on nursery plants and apples. Laboratory experiments as well as large scale fumigation tests will be conducted to control microbes and insects on stored and fresh products. Impact of fumigation on product quality will also be evaluated.
