Research Project: Classic and Molecular Breeding for Downy Mildew Resistance in Spinach

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-21530-002-013-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2016
End Date: Sep 29, 2019

Objective:
Diversify the genetic base of resistance to downy mildew disease and develop new resistant spinach cultivars.

Approach:
We will evaluate field resistance and identify QTL (quantitative trait loci) resistance to downy mildew in spinach; breed new spinach varieties with QTLs of downy mildew resistance; and pyramid resistance alleles through marker assisted selection to develop spinach varieties with durable resistance.
