Research Project: Host Status of Temperate and Tropical Fruits for Apple Maggot Fly

Location: Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research

Project Number: 2092-22430-002-036-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
The project objectives are to determine the susceptibility of 1) major U.S. apple varieties, 2) tropical fruit, and 3) peaches and cherries to attack by apple maggots in the field and laboratory.

Approach:
The approach will be to conduct tests in the laboratory and field exposing various fruits to apple maggot flies collected from sites in western Washington. For laboratory tests, single fruit will be exposed to flies inside half or one gallon containers under no-choice conditions. For field tests, fruit will be hung in apple-maggot infested apple and hawthorn trees from July to September in southwestern Washington to determine if flies will attack and infest them.
