Objective:
To field test elite sorghum lines that have been identified as being resistant to the sugarcane aphid.
Approach:
Many sources of sugarcane aphid resistant sorghum lines have been identified by USDA-ARS scientists through greenhouse screening. However, quantifying and qualifying the agronomic traits of these sugarcane aphid (SCA) resistant sorghums in the field under natural conditions has not been accomplished. Having SCA resistant is a benefit, but if those resistant sorghum lines do not have the yield and quality traits producers need for efficient profitable crop production, they will not be used. Some lines that have been identified have been released to the public for commercial use while others are very near ready for release. These are the lines that need the agronomic traits tested.
Field testing requires planting the elite sorghums in: 1) at a minimum three different locations and those locations should 2) be as diverse of an environment that the sorghums could be produced within the Great Plains.
