Research Project: Microbiome Analysis of Chicken Intestinal Content

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 3091-32000-035-003-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Sep 1, 2016
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
The objective of this research is to conduct in-depth microbiome analysis of intestinal samples collected from parental lines of chickens and their progeny to determine if there is a specific microbiome profile associated with increased resistance against foodborne pathogens.

Approach:
The Food and Feed Safety Research Unit (FFSRU) will provide approximately 150 intestinal samples to Montana State University (MSU) for analysis. The samples will be collected from various genetic lines of chickens from day-of-hatch to the appropriate slaughter age. MSU will analyze each intestinal sample using pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA
