Objective:
The objectives of this project to expand and refine myFields.info to include modules to manage sorghum varietal selection, geographic visualization of sugarcane aphid (SCA) infestations, pest alerts, and management decision making for SCA AWPM.
Approach:
The myFields.info system will be adapted to include necessary applications to manage sorghum varietal selection, pest management, and distribution mapping data as required for sugarcane aphid (SCA) AWPM. myFields.info is an open-source dynamic data management system developed by members of this project team to coordinate all aspects of IPM at local to regional geographic scales. myFields.info was built with capability to direct and facilitate pest sampling, multiple spatial scale pest mapping, pest alerts, plant variety selection, and preventive management approaches. It can be adapted to any crop and/or diverse cropping systems, including sorghum. We will refine the transmittal, processing, and geographic visualization of predictive model output and real-time SCA infestation monitoring data in myFields.info. The result will be to deploy a fully functional, open source SCA AWPM web-based monitoring and information management system that uses an alert system to direct monitoring efforts across the target region. To achieve the objective we will build modules using Drupal as the core of the SCA monitoring and information delivery system. The Drupal platform is highly modular, but more importantly it emphasizes collaboration. Design specifications will be developed through face-to-face interviews and interactive online chat sessions with growers and consultants. The development group will employ programmers to customize existing myFields.info code and develop web services. To maintain user privacy (e.g., NIST special publication 800-122, "Guide to Protecting the Confidentiality of Personally Identifiable Information (PII)"), we will work closely with the Chief Information Security Officer for K-State, to plan for and assess compliance with relevant IT security policies, federal guidance for protecting personal identity information, and other applicable security-related state and federal laws and regulations.
