Research Project: USDA Food Data System Information Technologies

Location: Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory

Project Number: 8040-52000-068-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2016
End Date: Aug 14, 2021

Objective:
To implement changes to update and modernize the IT infrastructure of the Food Composition and Methods Development Laboratory (FCMDL), the Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL) and Food Surveys Research Group (FSRG), specifically, integrating all ARS systems into the USDA Food Data System (FooDS).

Approach:
1. Identification of public and private partners to interface FooDS with other external and internal systems. 2. Facilitate research on how to share and utilize data related to food composition, food and dietary analyses across laboratories, agricultural and health information. 3. Collect data on utilization of FooDS by academia, consumers, industry, private sector and government and on changes in food composition over time; assess impact on best practice guidelines and public health policy. 4. Incorporate applications developed by 3rd party vendors/organizations into the new database. 5. Provide technical assistance in validation and verification of applications including the NDL Formulation Program, the FSRG Processor, and the FCMDL DNA and chemical fingerprint database. 6. Other collaborative work as mutually agreed upon including possible modification of modules within the database.
