Research Project: Longitudinal Data and Modeling to Support the Global Control and Eradication of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus

Location:

Project Number: 8064-32000-061-026-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2016
End Date: Apr 30, 2021

Objective:
The Ohio State University Disease Ecology and Computer Modeling Laboratory (DECML) is engaged in projects to model the transmission of infectious diseases of livestock, inclusive of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), to identify population behaviors that prevent or increase risk of endemic disease transmission globally. This work includes modeling animal movements, zoonotic disease transmission, environmental and spatial factors related to disease transmission, molecular evolution of viruses and human factors related to animal disease incidence and persistence. ARS, PIADC will conduct method validation, serologic testing and genetic sequence analysis of field isolates collected in Cameroon from 2010 to 2016 to identify carrier animals, viral determinants and changes in population immunity over time.

Approach:
DECML will provide a bank of systematically collected longitudinal serum samples along with detailed epidemiological information to ARS, PIADC. DECML will also provide a molecular biologist, and a web-based interface to coordinate and test samples and to enter and query data. Linked probang and tissue samples will be screened in Cameroon by RT-PCR and positive samples will be shipped to ARS, PIADC. PIADC will determine viral sequences through viral isolation, RT-PCR, and sequencing and results will be shared with DECML via the web-interface. Serum samples will be shipped directly to PIADC, and ARS will conduct serotype-specific serum neutralization tests to provide results (positive or negative) for each serotype to DECML through the web-interface. DECML and ARS will jointly analyze the data and collaborate in co-authored manuscript drafts.
