Objective:
The objectives of the collaborative research are to develop and apply novel methods and technologies to the management of insect pests of apple, pear, and cherry crops. These objectives will include 1) insect detection technology, 2) disruptants of insect behaviors, 3) and methods to enhance natural enemies of insect pests.
Approach:
Conduct laboratory and field research to discover, develop and apply pheromones and kairomones, natural enemies, and cultural methods for use against codling moth, pear psylla, brown marmorated stink bug and other pests. Host plant and microbial kairomones studied are the basis for development of novel detection methods, control of pests by attract-and-kill, and disruption of insect host finding and oviposition. We will acquire personnel services from the Cooperator to further agricultural research supporting these objectives which are the independent interests of both parties. Research will include a combination of laboratory experiments using acquired and reared insects, bioassays, molecular and analytical chemistry equipment and techniques, followed by field experiments in agricultural landscapes to test resultant approaches and technologies.
