Research Project: Sustainable Beef-Forage Systems for the Southern Plains

Location: Forage and Livestock Production Research

Project Number: 3070-21610-003-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2015
End Date: Jul 30, 2020

Objective:
To develop and deliver climate-smart beef-forage systems that are resilient across a wide range of climate, economic, and policy environments.

Approach:
The GRL and OSU cooperative teams will convene a 1-day workshop to identify risks and vulnerabilities in integrated beef-forage systems in the Southern Plains, strategies to enhance the resilience of these systems, and critical knowledge and technology gaps that limit the ability of farmers, ranchers, and landowners to develop more resilient systems. Based on this assessment, collaborative research will be developed within the Southern Plains LTAR framework and OSU priority areas to fill the knowledge and education/outreach gaps. Available research data will be developed into Extension and outreach materials. Parallel experiments may be established at GRL and at OSU research facilities. The field research will interface into a collaborative modeling effort, focused on improving models for application to complex soil-plant-animal-climate systems.
