Research Project: Development of Alternative Fumigation Treatments for Pest Control

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 2038-22430-002-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2015
End Date: Aug 31, 2020

Objective:
Develop alternative methods to methyl bromide fumigation for pest control.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, (ARS) and the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to develop alternative treatments with potential to control a wide range of pests, including nitric oxide fumigation and phosphine fumigation for pest control on fresh products. Laboratory experiments as well as large scale fumigation tests will be conducted to control a variety of pests on fresh commodities. The impact of fumigation on postharvest quality of fresh products will be determined.
