Research Project: Characterization of Foodborne Pathogens from Dairy Operations

Location: Environmental Microbial & Food Safety Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-32000-110-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2015
End Date: Feb 29, 2020

Objective:
The long term goal is to develop and optimize management strategies that minimize the prevalence of zoonotic enteric bacteria, including those resistant to antimicrobial agents, in dairy production systems. The specific objective of this project is characterize and compare bacterial pathogens (Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, and pathogenic E. coli) that have been isolated from dairy animals and their environment. Results will be used to identify potential factors that influence colonization dynamics in the bovine gut.

Approach:
Bacterial isolates have been collected and bio-banked. Characterization methods may include antimicrobial resistance screening, whole genome sequencing, targeted sequencing methods such as multi locus sequence testing and other methods as needed.
