Research Project: Stink Bug Trapping and Trap Cropping in Commercial and Experimental Crops

Location: Invasive Insect Biocontrol & Behavior Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-288-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2014
End Date: Aug 14, 2019

Objective:
Test the effectiveness of trap crops for suppression of stink bugs, especially harlequin bugs, for protection of commercial vegetable crops in different regions of Virginia, with and without use of aggregation pheromones, and evaluate other tactics for commercial vegetable crop pest management, which incorporate discoveries of stink bug pheromones and other attractants.

Approach:
ARS will provide expertise on response of stink bugs to specific pheromone lures and other volatile attractants, and provide experimental lures for harlequin bug and other stink bugs, based on ongoing research and novel chemical syntheses within the ARS Beltsville Invasive Insect Biocontrol and Behavior Laboratory. The Cooperator will provide expertise and experimental designs for testing the lures for monitoring and management of pests in commercial settings realistic for cole and other vegetable crops in the Southeast which are host plants of harlequin bug and other stink bugs.
