Research Project: Behavioral Effects of BMSB, Halyomorpha halys, Aggregation Pheromone and a Pheromone Synergist on Overwintering Site Selection by Adult H. halys

Location: Innovative Fruit Production, Improvement, and Protection

Project Number: 8080-21000-030-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2014
End Date: Jul 31, 2019

Objective:
The objectives for this project are: 1) to examine the individual and combined effects of the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) aggregation pheromone and a pheromone synergist on the selection of small shelters by adult BMSB seeking overwintering sites, 2) to examine the individual and combined effects of the BMSB aggregation pheromone and a pheromone synergist on the selection of small buildings by adult BMSB seeking overwintering sites, 3) to examine the effect of BMSB aggregation pheromone and synergist dispenser loading on the selection of small shelters and/or small buildings by adult BMSB seeking overwintering sites, and 4) to examine the effect of BMSB aggregation pheromone and synergist dispenser density on the selection of small buildings by adult BMSB seeking overwintering sites.

Approach:
We will deploy the pheromone and synergist just prior to adult dispersal to potential overwintering sites, represented here by small shelters and buildings, and evaluate the impact on BMSB willingness to enter these sites.
