Research Project: Developing FHB Resistant Small Grain Cultivars for Maryland

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-247-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
1) Evaluation of small grain germplasm to identify new sources of resistance against FHB 2) Mapping and identification of new genes and alleles for FHB resistance in small grain germplasm 3) Fast-track deployment and delivery of FHB resistant small grain cultivars for MD growers and stakeholders

Approach:
Integrated approaches will be used to identify new sources of genetic resistance against FHB. Marker assisted selection and genomic selection will be used to select improved lines for varietal advancements. To fast-track the delivery of improved cultivars with enhanced levels of resistance to FHB, Speed Breeding and DH based pipelines will be used.
