Location: Crop Production and Protection
Project Number: 0500-00053-005-241-G
Project Type: Grant
Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030
Objective:
Resistant cultivars are the primary means to control FHB. Resistance must be combined with high yield for field-level impact. My objective is to develop and market new soft wheat cultivars that combine high levels of FHB resistance with high yield in cultivars adapted to the upper Midwest.
Approach:
We will develop 1,000 of new lines from crosses of elite parents, and select hundreds that will be evaluated for FHB resistance in a disease-inducing environment. We use new molecular breeding technologies in our selections and will coordinate and participate in a regional cooperative FHB trial.
