Research Project: IPM and Forecasting for FHB and DON in Wheat for Wisconsin

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-239-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
FHB and associated DON contamination continue to threaten wheat grain and straw quality in Wisconsin. This project will evaluate the efficacy of new and existing fungicides and assess forecast-guided versus calendar-based application for disease management. Outcomes will quantify economic benefits and generate data to validate and refine FHB risk prediction models.

Approach:
Field trials will evaluate fungicide efficacy, economics, and integration with the Fusarium Head Blight forecasting system to guide profitable disease management decisions. Uniform trials will compare existing and new products for control of FHB and deoxynivalenol in grain and straw, supporting integrated, risk-based fungicide recommendations
