Research Project: Elevating FHB Resistance in South Dakota Spring Wheat

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-202-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
The overall objective of this research is to develop and advance high-yielding, adapted Hard Red Spring Wheat varieties with improved Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance and lower DON accumulation for South Dakota and the upper Midwest through sustained phenotypic selection, genomic tools, and regional collaboration.

Approach:
This project integrates conventional phenotypic selection in mist-irrigated and inoculated FHB nurseries with genomic selection, marker-assisted selection for major QTL, high-throughput FDK phenotyping, and speedbreeding to rapidly develop and release high-yielding, moderately FHB-resistant Hard Red Spring Wheat varieties for South Dakota and the upper Midwest.
