Research Project: Improving FHB Resistance in UNL Wheat and Barley

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-199-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
1. Develop winter wheat and barley cultivars for Great Plains producers with improved FHB resistance and reduced DON accumulation using phenotypic and genotypic methods. 2. Conduct phenotypic screening in an inoculated disease nursery for regional winter wheat and barley breeders. 3. Evaluate fungicide x cultivar interactions for optimized disease reduction.

Approach:
We will exchange germplasm with regional programs and USDA-ARS pre-breeding programs to add new major resistance genes or quantitative resistance to the UNL winter wheat and barley program. We will conduct inoculated field phenotypic screening in mist nurseries to develop training data for genomic prediction models.
