Research Project: Breeding Durum Wheat for Fusarium Head Blight Resistance

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-197-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2030

Objective:
1) Breeding FHB-resistant durum wheat. 2) Screen lines for FHB resistance in greenhouses and irrigated field nurseries. 3) Evaluate lines for DON. 4) Use marker assisted selection at USDA-ARS genotyping center in Fargo, ND. 5) Evaluate FHB resistant lines for quality. 6) Develop new populations using new sources of resistance.

Approach:
Develop populations by crossing resistant sources to pyramid FHB QTL; advance generations using winter nurseries; screen in greenhouse and field using inoculation nurseries; select <30% severity; evaluate in multistage trials across North Dakota; assess DON, agronomic and quality traits; Collaborative genotyping using markers to pyramid FHB resistance in durum wheat.
