Objective:
(1) Breed SRWW varieties that have excellent scab resistance, high agronomic performance and quality
(2) Contribute to coordinated trials, and quantify scab resistance in state trials.
(3) Assess new approaches to enhance FHB resistance in SRWW
(4) Conduct grower and stakeholder outreach that benefits the regional industry
Approach:
We conduct plant breeding, making >400 crosses annually, informed by genomic data. Breeding lines, cooperative nurseries and state variety trials are screened in our inoculated, misted nursery. We test new selection strategies to increase program efficiency and genetic gain. We communicate with growers through field days, online publications and newsletters.
