Research Project: Introgression of Greenbug and Bird Cherry-oat Aphid Resistance Genes from Synthetic Hexaploid Wheat Lines into Bread Wheat

Location: Peanut and Small Grains Research Unit

Project Number: 3070-21000-010-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2026
End Date: Aug 31, 2027

Objective:
To identify and introgress genes conferring resistance to greenbug and bird cherry oat aphid into adapted germplasm.

Approach:
Greenbug (GB) and bird cherry oat aphid (BCOA) pose persistent threat to wheat production in the USA. ARS in Stillwater, OK, focus on characterization and introgression of aphid-resistance genes into adapted germplasm with genomics-assisted selection. Our long term goal is to breed high-yielding germplasm with good biotic resistances. The cooperator will help ARS scientist to 1) identify novel GB and BCOA resistance sources by screening large set of synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW) lines; 2) characterize GB and BCOA resistance genes with molecular markers; and 3) introgress GB and BCOA resistance genes into elite cultivars with marker-assisted backcrossing.
